Visit Portugal and discover Clérigos Church

The Clérigos Church, a Baroque work in Porto, was designed by Nicolau Nasoni and it’s the highest in Portugal, with 76 meters high. This is one of the most emblematic monuments of the city of Porto and, from its top, the Tower offers us a panoramic view of the city. But everything has a price and the price of this view is 225 steps. Along the staircase, there will be 49 bells which, together, form a beautiful melody.

Chapel of Bones

Clothed with bones, the walls of the Chapel of Bones aim to transmit to all those who enter the fragility of human life. “The bones lying here are waiting for yours” is the letter of welcome that receives us at the entrance of space. The idea, although considered macabre by many, is simple: in the 17th-century, when it was built, the three Franciscan friars aimed to convey the fragility of the human condition.

Pantheon

For every history fanatic, this is a monument not to be missed. Erected in 1568, the temple only began to play the role of Pantheon from 1916 onwards. The most illustrious characters of Portuguese History and Culture are buried there: from fadista Amália Rodrigues, to Humberto Delgado, who helped to return freedom to the Portuguese people on the 25th of April, among many other illustrious characters. Although never open to worship, the Pantheon preserves, under the modern dome, the majestic space of the nave, animated by the decoration of colorful marbles, characteristic of Portuguese Baroque architecture.

Sé do Porto

In religious terms, the Cathedral of Porto is the most important monument of the city, which still preserves in itself vestiges of the primitive Romanesque building built between the first half of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th century. The imposing cathedral is located in the neighbourhood of Batalha, near the walls that protected the city and offered the title of “Invicta”. Next to the Cathedral was built, in 1582, the House of the Cabido and recovered later, in the 18th century, where is the Treasure of the Sé in exhibition.

Santuário de Fátima

Fátima’s Sanctuary is composed by a series of religious buildings dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Fátima, such as Chapel of the Apparitions, Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, and Basilica of the Holy Trinity, amongst many others. The sanctuary became a place of Christian pilgrimage and deep Catholic devotion that preserves the memory of events that marked the country’s religious tradition, including the apparition of Nossa Senhora de Fátima to the three little shepherds in 1917. 

Temple of Diana

Built in the 1st century AD, better known as the Temple of Diana, it is located in the city of Évora, in Alentejo. The Alentejo known for its beautiful plains, traditions and beaches, and it has in its centre one of the biggest landmarks of the Roman presence in Portugal. Built in honour of Emperor Augustus, the temple only has ruins, being partially destroyed by the Germanic invasions in Vth century.
