The project has the taste of “new beginning of life” for Turkish couple Faik and Sera Yufkayürek, who left the financial and banking world – beyond their home country – to create in Alentejo a state-of-the-art hotel with associated tourist residences. , in an investment that will amount to € 25 million, with support from Portugal 2020.
Named Umay, the name of the Turkish fertility goddess, the tourism project will take place in Melides, on 20 hectares of land by the sea, where the construction will occupy no more than 4%, fitting within the natural undulations of the soil. The project is expected to begin next year, to be completed by the end of 2021.
Faik e Sera Yufkayürek are the masterminds behind this project that fell in love with Portugal at first sight. The couple immediately felt at home, or rather in a kind of sanctuary. For three weeks, they explored the outskirts of the capital – Arrábida, Sesimbra and Meco. “We were expecting to find beautiful landscapes, but it was the people who surprised us. Of course, there aren’t many places in Europe where you can buy land near the beach, overlooking the sea and an hour from the capital. Nature, good food, good people and a good set of values – the couple summarizes the formula that led him to fall in love, first with Portugal and then with Melides, which virgin version of a phenomenon called Comporta.
Pure nature spoke much louder than a hippie-chic style. Still, both recognize that the entire shoreline is in the sights of dozens of investors and that even a green oasis-like Melides is unlikely to change in the medium term. At the second attempt to buy, they got the ideal land. To merge a luxury resort with nature, Faik and Sera hired Portuguese Vasco Vieira, the architect responsible for the Areias do Seixo hotel in the West region. The woods, the curved lines, a central building camouflaged in the eyes of the newcomer, a terracotta-like cement – for now, Umay is visible only through simulations of the project. Still, you can get an idea of the colossus on its way to Melides. There are 28 rooms (six of them deluxe), 21 wooden houses (these are slightly elevated to create the treehouse feel), ten private villas, gardens and pools, a spa and restaurant and a 600 m2 greenhouse.
The investment is around 25 million euros. The houses and villas are for sale, prices range from 450,000 to 1,375,000 euros. Living in the complex is part of the Yufkayürek family’s plans. The sound of the crickets, the sandy soil and the smell of rosemary convinced Faik and Sera to make the first trip to the field. In addition, the sea is five kilometres away. Construction has not yet started, but the project is expected to be completed by 2021.
