Pestana Plaza Mayor Madrid was distinguished as the Best New Boutique Hotel in Europe, an award given by the Boutique Hotel Awards of 2019. Participants are selected by a group of industry experts and the specialized press, who personally visit all units and then recognize the most distinguished ones.
The awards ceremony focused on boutique hotels took place in London and distinguished the first Pestana hotel in the Spanish capital, to be more located in the imposing historic square: this year was the first time a hotel in the Plaza Mayor was authorized. The hotel opened in May from the conversion of two buildings, the Casa de la Panadería and the Casa de la Carnicería.
The hotel is part of the Pestana Collection brand, the “most exclusive in the group”, with 89 rooms and suites, half of them opening onto balconies over the square.
More than 300 hotels from 80 countries were nominated for the Boutique Travel Awards, the statement said. The Boutique hotel segment is characterized by items such as the unique concept and luxury, the services offered and the individual customer service, as well as the reduced number of rooms (less than a hundred).
According to the organization of the awards, nominations are made by “industry experts, luxury travel journalists or self-nominating subject to approval”. The nominees are then verified by on-site experts and the awards are decided by an expert panel that includes, among others, contributors to publications such as the Financial Times, Condé Nast’s or Vogue.
The Pestana Plaza Mayor Madrid is a unique and unparalleled luxury hotel, paying tribute to the work of weavers, embroiderers, blacksmiths, carpenters and potters. It’s also a tribute to its original architecture, where every exposed brick on its strong walls bears the scars of history in a simple and natural way. Illuminated baroque scenery, Islamic art heritage, inspiration from great artists such as Goya or Velázquez and Herrerian-style staircases, with the Casa de la Carnicería was built in the 17th century, are just some of the elements that have been brought to the heart of the city’s history.
Hotel Pestana was the only representative of the Iberian Peninsula distinguished at the 2019 Boutique Travel Awards ceremony, the 9th edition of the awards.
