The huge lobby surprises with its imposing chandelier consisting of five pounds of golden chains. The red curtains, the huge mirrors and the pink shades complete the backdrop of an enchanted story, similar to Lewis Carroll’s celebrated book Alice in Wonderland. On the other hand, the welcome at the Savoy Palace – a 17-room building with 352 rooms (from € 150), including 14 pool suites and two 250-square-meter presidential suites with a pool – gives the real professionalism and care by the host.
The refinement extends to the Lobby Lounge, Bar & Cigar. On one side are the sofas, armchairs and side tables, decoration characterized by the classic style combined with brightness and reflected in a huge mirror arranged in the back of the room. Towards the end of the afternoon, preparations arrive for the “Tea of Five”, the tradition of the former Savoy Hotel, founded in 1912, precisely where today is the Savoy Palace. The infusions are made from exclusive blends of a famous teas shop in Funchal.
Opposite cocktails are served, ideal for a late afternoon drink or after an extended meal. This space is dominated by greens and earth tones, a tribute to the island’s laurel forest. In the background, cigar lovers, whether guests or the public outside the hotel, have at their disposal a specially dedicated room: the Cigar Club. For this purpose, a rum letter was drawn, highlighting those produced in Madeira and spirits.
The exuberant staircase, in front of the lobby with the handrail in matte gold, alluding to the typical Madeiran embroidery, allows access to three dining spaces. Atelier Orchidaceae, exclusive for the unmissable breakfast, and the Hibiscus restaurant, where the buffet is served at dinner time. Both share the brightness of sunny days and garden views from the outdoor pool. Each has a particularity to consider: the representative lamp of the respective plants. The Vimes is, in turn, the entertainment bar, with allegorical decoration to the traditional work dedicated to the wicker industry, originating in Camacha, a parish southeast of Madeira Island.
“Internal experiences are our biggest bet,” says Nuno Antunes, Corporate Development & Innovation Director of Savoy Signature. Proof of the diversity of common spaces concentrated on floors 0, 2 and 16. In the latter are the Rosewood Lounge & Club and the Galaxy. The first is an exclusive catering space for suite guests and is reserved for private events. Inspired by the art deco style, it is favoured by the stunning panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean. The outdoor bar supports the infinity pool and jet pool at the top of the building, as well as the inviting solarium consisting of chaise lounges and daybeds facing the magnificent sea view.
At the other end of the building is the Galaxy in honour of the mythical nightclub of the former Savoy Hotel. Divided into the Skybar Galaxy and Skyfood Galaxy, it breaks with the classic style of the remaining common spaces. At first, the signature cocktail offer dictates well-known song names, such as Space Oddity, Rocket Man or Dark Side of the Moon, to enjoy on the deck overlooking the sea and the city of Funchal, with the adult sky pool and nooks and crannies. created for guests only.
Before going down to floor 0 we have to talk about the accommodation units. Decorated with elegant furnishings coupled with the gold of the decorative pieces and the predominance of light tones, the 354 rooms excel for comfort and most of the sea view. Without neglecting the warm feeling of a peaceful night’s sleep, nor the singular light characteristic of the city of Funchal, thanks to the generous balconies, in particular of the pool suites and presidential suites.
