ALMA Restaurant is The Perfect Place For a Delightful Meal ♦ Thre are lots of people that don’t know, and some of them even dare to ask: Before welcoming ALMA Restaurant (Alma means Soul), the “house” of the renowed Portuguese chef Henrique Sá Pessoa, what was this space? Some of them imagine another restaurant, others more imaginative, think of a room for shows, or maybe even a chapel.
But the truth is far from that. ALMA Restaurant is installed in an old warehouse of the bookstore Bertrand, the oldest bookstore in Europe, on the number 15 of Rua Anchieta, in Lisbon. The complex and delicate restoration of the building was done by the Portuguese architect Tiago Silva Dias, who tried to respect the identity of the space, highlighting the original nobility and charisma.
This is an 18th-century Pombal building built after the earthquake of 1755. So the transformation of the space from a book warehouse to a restaurant has focused on the details that make all the difference. The Soul of the place remained.
Who would have thought that a store of books could continue making history?
Now, this old warehouse of Bertrand serves as the main stage of a restaurant of author’s kitchen, where everything will be prepared to the detail to offer you the best experience. The basis of Sá Pessoa’s gastronomic philosophy lies in his influences and references: traditional Portuguese cuisine, world travel, passion for Asia and life in Lisbon.
ALMA Restaurant is defined as a fine dining restaurant: author’s cuisine served informally in a sophisticated setting. It aims to be an innovative space, not only with regard to the approaches it proposes but also to simplify and break down some basic rules of the service, which is rigorous but relaxed.
For Henrique Sá Pessoa there is just the good and the bad kitchen. He tries to define his as a cuisine of taste: refined taste, perfect technique and excellent product. Besides a delicious menu, here you can also have a delightful time trying the wine list, a memorable experience.
The wine list has a careful and varied offer of some of the best Portuguese wines, but it’s a menu created for the cuisine that is served at ALMA Restaurant. In addition to a range of intricate labels from the most relevant producers in the country, the ALMA Charter also has many surprises and illustrious unknowns: natural wines, unorthodox and daring proposals.
