Josefinas is a Portuguese brand born from a dream. In a country in crisis, where there was little room for dreams, making handmade shoes had a new name: Josefinas. In Portugal, there is something that has never died: the savoir-faire of craftsmen and the passion for an idea. ‘Never give up’ has always defined Josefinas’ path. The name Josefinas was born in honour of Filipa Júlio’s grandmother, the brand’s co-founder.
The model is not new – it is the most sold model of the badge – but the material chosen offers a special touch. Josefinas decided to join one of Portugal’s oldest traditions to develop a pair of hand-made black burel sabres. The burel is organic and has high levels of strength and impermeability, leading Josefinas to suggest the novelty as the ideal option for the fall/winter season. It is, by the way, a limited edition, available only during the coming months.
“We are very proud to promote a Portuguese material that, besides being representative of our history, is environmentally friendly. And it’s amazing to see how this art, which has passed from generation to generation, is so valued in international markets, ”says Josefinas CEO and Creative Director Maria Cunha.
The message of female emancipation is inseparable from the Josephine brand image since its inception. The first Josefinas, the ballerinas created for work context, undeniably give women greater freedom of movement. After these come models inspired by feminist movements or women who have stood out in the line of history: the Power Women ballerinas, the Rose (Rosa Parks) sneakers, the Sisterhood mules, the Gabrielle (Chanel) boots, the Suffragettes shoes, among others. The recently released Leave shoes also contain a strong message: Get out of the oppressive relationship that many women find themselves in. Beyond the idea is one action: Josefinas Leave’s profit margin reverts to two domestic violence victim support associations – APAV in Portugal and She is Rising in the United States.
They cost 3369 euros and the brand claims that they are the most expensive ballerinas in the world. The Persian Blue Salt Josefinas is part of the 1001 Nights collection, joining the know-how of the artisans of the factory that supplies the Josefinas with the knowledge of master jewellers. The marriage of the two arts results in a pair of blue suede ballerinas with a gold pendant and blue topaz with leather lining and leather sole.
