dEMM Arquitectura is an award-winning Portuguese architecture company based in Portugal and famous for their several contemporary projects such as ‘Living Foz’. Their main goal is to develop new ideas and concepts in housing which from their point of view are the main areas of focus in architecture.

Paulo Fernandes Silva is the architect responsible for the project that has a perfect view of the ocean. The ‘fine contours’ of Foz do Douro hides behind the fine covers of this magnificent project. This building has a certain lightness and fine contours and shows a rhythm between dark concrete and wood.

The four apartments, a studio, two two-bedroom houses and a four bedroom duplex, can easily be adapted to the needs of a daily basis. Optimize and open spaces are two of the characteristics of this amazing and versatile project.

Paulo Fernandes Silva, the architect,  also highlights the materials used in the construction. “The dark concrete with a connection to wood is completely unique,” he says. The junction of the elements with the drawing resulted in the “unique language” that makes the building lighter – a necessary condition since it is inserted in the middle of other buildings and next to the street.

Although all have a view of the sea, it is from the apartment T4 – which occupies the third and fourth floors – that there is access to the roof of the building, where there are a jacuzzi and a solarium.  In the remaining apartments, the social areas are facing west, through large “glass sheets” and the rooms are facing east (towards the street). The front façade is therefore “more closed and has wood and flowerbeds to cover it”.

In 2018, dEMM architecture rehabilitated an apartment also in Foz do Douro, overlooking the sea. The project achieved an honourable mention at the 11th edition of the International Design Awards.
