The most famous shoe designer in the world, Christian Louboutin, surrendered to Portugal’s charms a few years ago. And it was in Alentejo that he decided to set up “arraiais”, namely in Melides, in the municipality of Grândola, where he has a holiday home and bought land in 2017 to build a charming hotel. The project finally got off the ground and is already under construction, with completion scheduled for 2021.
The charming hotel will have 15 rooms and a restaurant, according to Jornal de Negócios. Having overcome the problems with basic sanitation and also issues related to environmental standards, the French designer had a “green light” to move forward with the hotel, designed by the Portuguese architect Madalena Caiado.
Louboutin spent 500,000 euros to acquire the land and is expected to invest around two million in tourism infrastructure. The truth is that Melides won a special place in the heart of the creator, who even launched a line of shoes to which he gave the name of this village located on the Alentejo coast.
Louboutin and his known passion for Portugal
Louboutin’s passion for Portugal is not new. The first time he came to the country “was a long time ago, when he was in his 20s”, to spend holidays with a friend and stayed at the Palácio de Seteais in Sintra, the designer once confided in an interview to Expresso.
“Portugal is my second or third home. France, of course, is the first, and the second is Italy, where I produce shoes, I spend a lot of time here. I design some of my collections here. I love Portugal because I love Portuguese. No, it is possible to like a country without liking its people. I am Breton, I was born on the coast and found the same here, but with better weather “, said the stylist, at the time, praising the country.
