To mark World Bread Day, this Wednesday, CNN made an article that brings together the 50 best bread in the world and included the typical Portuguese cornbread on the list. Next to the Portuguese bread are the also famous lavash from Armenia, the cheese bread from Brazil, the French baguette and tortillas from Mexico.
The list, published Wednesday, October 16, includes some of the world’s best-known carbohydrates, such as Brazil’s cheese bread; the french baguettes; ciabatta from Italy; Mexican tortillas and even khachapuri, a boat-shaped Georgian speciality made with cheese and a starry egg. Anyone reading a full list of exotic names – from as far away as New Zealand, Ethiopia, Venezuela, Yemen or South Korea – needs to focus their eyes twice when they come across the title “Cornbread, Portugal”, over an image of one of the best-known breads in the country.
“When the bread is baked with wood in stone ovens, it forms a floury crust archipelago that expands into deep cracks,” says CNN’s description of the Portuguese speciality.
The magazine also explains the historical origins of cornbread: “Europeans did not try maize until it reached the Americas, but it would be strongly adopted among regions of northern Portugal, where soil conditions are not conducive to flour production.”
