Café Príncipe Real dining experience is a celebration of the Lusophony roots through Portuguese and international dishes reflecting the influences of Portugal around the world especially in Brazil, Africa and Asia. A delightful journey through some of the most desirable flavours. It’s no secret that at Café Principe Real, located in the Memmo Hotel of the same Lisbon neighbourhood, the menu has always been distinguished by its hot dishes – and we don’t just talk about temperature. Lusophone and Asian cuisine has always been an inspiration to the kitchen team, who have created dishes such as oven-glazed sweet-sour pork with sautéed barley and mushrooms, an unclassic à Brás and others such as the Asian duck, the grouper curry made with a homemade pasta and the carolino grouper with rice from Bulhão Pato – the most requested of the hotel.
It was the last three that resisted in the last overhaul of the restaurant letter, which happened recently, just in the summertime. As the first course arrives at one of the tables in the elegant living room, overlooking the Café Principe Real Terrace, they explain that the change has brought a host of new lighter alternatives. Much to the request of regular customers who live in the city and we’re looking for less robust dishes this season, but no less tasty.
Loyal customers fear nothing – not least because the famous duck croquettes and tempuras are still part of the menu – yet the change has made room for new entrées like a pea vichyssoise, quail egg and ham chips, served fresh but also a slightly spicy Corvina ceviche with mango cream and pea sprouts.
Among the main dishes, the royal crab is a winning ingredient, being used both in a fresh salad with lettuce, avocado and thai sauce (sesame vinaigrette, soy, garlic and ginger), but also in an addictive and simple tagliatelle with vegetables. Asian If you like slightly heavier dishes, try the black pork cheeks with asparagus risotto, or go straight to the never-disappointing desserts.
And because not enjoying the view would be almost a failure, it is to enjoy the late afternoons and music on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, to explore the terrace adjoining the restaurant. There are seven new cocktails to explore, all with fresh ingredients, such as this new facet of Café Príncipe Real, which has already integrated into the new season.
