Best Portuguese Painter Honoured: Júlio Pomar
Júlio Pomar was the most talented Portuguese painter. After his death, all that was left was his amazing work and a superb museum that pays him a tribute that will always survive after him. When young, far from knowing all the magic that the Portuguese painting had saved for him in the future, but already with an immaculate passion for this art, Júlio Pomar studied in Lisbon and, after that, in Porto, at the Porto Academy of Fine Arts. There, he joined a group of fellow artists called the Independents, a movement that despaired for the modernization of the Portuguese art.
Pomar participated in the neo-realistic movement from 1945 until 1957 and later his work became truly marked by the neo-expressionism movement. His portfolio is longer and better than words can tell and he has even illustrated a children’s book by the American-Portuguese novelist Richard Zimler, “O Cão que Comia a Chuva”- “The Dog That Ate The Rain”, in English.
