Belcanto: The First Restaurant in Lisbon With Two Michelin Stars ♦ “The light, the life, the neighbourhoods, the people, the history, the river, the land, the sea. Here we live, here we grow. Here we are inspired, here we walk. The kitchen is our fado, our way of expression”. This is how José Avillez, a renowned Portuguese chef, describes its kitchen, strongly influenced by the city of Lisbon.

Distinguished with two Michelin stars, Belcanto opened doors in 1958, in Chiado, one of the most important arteries of Lisbon, the Portuguese capital. The location is, on itself, a perfect reason to explore this fine dining restaurant. But then, you add a discrete service and Avillez cuisine’s and you get the most perfect place that has conquered the heart and the taste of everyone who tries it.
In 2012, Belcanto was totally renovated, and therefore the first Michelin star came. Two years passed by until Avillez got his second Michelin star and conquered the honour of being the first restaurant in Lisbon with that distinguishment. When you enter Belcanto and sit on a table, with a sophisticated and exquisite design, you can’t expect anything less than a gastronomic sensorial journey absolutely unique that starts on the romanticism of the ancient Chiado and drives you to the future.

“We are nonconformists by nature. Every day we want to learn and find answers to the questions that emerge in order to evolve and move forward”, explained the Portuguese chef José Avillez.
Considered as one of the main references in the Portuguese cuisine, Avillez has been highlighted by its entrepreneur spirit and his will to go further. Today, the Portuguese chef has several restaurants both in Lisbon and Porto that, besides offering unique gastronomic experiences, express his enormous passion for the kitchen. It’s the kitchen that truly identifies him and that expresses his creative evolution.
