The Portuguese bar that’s inspired in several decades from the history of the cocktail party, among which is the United States of America prohibition, when the speakeasy bars or secret bars arose, is in the prestigious 92nd place of the renowned World’s Best Bars list.
The History that inspires this place – the one when the speakeasy bars or secret bars started to arise – is the reason why you must ring the bell to get into Red Frog, in Rua do Salitre, near Avenida da Liberdade, one of the most popular avenues in Lisbon, where all the great luxury stores are.
On this spicy environment that takes you on a trip back to the 20’s, there is a secret room and creative cocktails, with unused ingredients, which have earned it before the title of the Best Portuguese Bar by the Lisbon Bar Show. Behind the Red Frog counter, you’ll almost always found Paulo Gomes, the barman that’s also one of the two partners who own the place and that have never hidden the goal of entering in the list of the 50 Best Bars in the world. Now, in the 92nd position, they are closer than ever of achieving their goal.

To achieve their main goal – to enter in the list of the Top 50 – in 2018, the cocktail menu of Red Frog has been renewed. Besides lots of alcohol, of course, you can now find even more unused ingredients – popcorns, waffles and fruits. Yes, you read it right – all that in a cocktail.
“We have to improve day by day, to refine our expertise and scale the list up to the top 50, which we know it’s difficult, but never impossible”, says Paulo Gomes.
But not only the content of the menu has changed. A book comes to replace the old large folded sheet. There are now more and even better options, lots of news and the classic ones, that never leave the menu: “Spiced Rusty Cherry and American Gangster are cocktails that had started this journey with us. We can’t just take them out”.
This is a much slower process than it looks like at first sight. Preparing the menu takes around six months: “Between travels and lots of research, the creative process is always there – and it’s fundamental. When we end a menu, we start as soon as possible working on the next one”.
