Regulars will tell you that the best way to experience Comporta is to rent a house. And this one, a family-friendly project that sleeps 10, makes the most of its views over rice fields that flick from water-logged to luminous green as the seasons change. From the stripped-down main bedroom, which has poured-concrete floors, wooden ladders and shaggy, palm-fibre lampshades, there’s a view of the sunrise over the fields, punctuated only by the orange trees in the garden.
The house is built in the style of traditional local fishermen’s huts: in wood, with a thatched roof, set on stilts, but with a modern twist and a little more comfort. The lines are clean and straight. The decoration is simple and welcoming. The aim is that everyone will feel at home there. Campo de Arroz is in a natural setting, from every room there are far-reaching views over the rice fields. The property comprises a main house plus a separate cabin set in the landscaped garden. With 4 bedrooms, it can accommodate 10 guests. The house and the cabin can be rented separately or together. The infinity pool, the deck and the exterior kitchen together provide an outside living space surrounded by nature.
Outside is a huge barbecue with a pergola-sheltered table, and a swimming pool to leap into. The other way, the dense forest backdrop is filled with umbrella pines and gnarled cork trees. Without this place’s sandy, wooden decking, it would be easy to forget it’s so close to the beach. But just behind the treeline are miles of unspoilt caster-sugar dunes. From Carvalhal it’s walking distance to Pego for lunch at Restaurante Sal, where locals pull on their Sunday best to feast on grilled fish, octopus-ink rice and endless rosé. This is a great spot to go off-grid in the same way the savvy crowd have been doing for decades.

These hotels were created with the project Alma da Comporta that aims to share the best of Comporta to the world. It is in this grandiose setting that Charline and Antoine decided to build their houses project, Alma da Comporta. Comporta is a little paradise as if lost at the end of the world. It reigns a serenity and a sweetness of life without ostentation that seduced them immediately, from their first trip here. Comporta is surrounded by rice paddies, the ocean, sand dunes and pine forests. It’s a unique place, where you can connect with nature and live in the moment. To some people, the fishing cabins on stilts conjure up images of Asia, whilst for others, the magnificent white-sand beaches bordering the ocean evoke the Hamptons, but Comporta has a rhythm and an ambience that are all it’s own. This wild place has long been kept secret by regular visitors, who appreciate the ‘tranquilidade’ of this distinctive region. And although spending holidays here is becoming more and more ‘trendy’, make no mistake – Comporta isn’t the new Ibiza. This is the epitome of slowness and simplicity; a little corner of paradise, suspended between the ocean and the rice paddies.
